American Copy Editors Society - A professional organization of copy editors that is dedicated to improving the quality of journalism and the working lives of journalists. Their main purpose is to educate their members--and others in the news business--in ways of improving the standards of copy editing and increasing the value the news industry places on the craft. While thier primary focus is on newspaper copy editing, they welcome editors from other publications, as well as academic representatives and students. 
American Press Institute - The oldest and largest center devoted solely to training and professional development for the news industry and journalism educators.

American Society of Newspaper Editors - The American Society of Newspaper Editors is the leading organization of daily newspaper editors in the Americas. It is primarily an organization for its members to share ideas. It also carries on a variety of programs, projects and initiatives for the good of journalism through its committees. Its leaders include editors from newspapers of all sizes. 

Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications - An international association of some 3,300 journalism/mass communication faculty, students, administrators, and professionals. AEJMC's members come from more than 30 countries, with the majority working in the United States and Canada. Founded in 1912, AEJMC is the oldest and largest association of journalism and mass communication educators and administrators at the college level. 

Broadcast Education Association - BEA is an academic organization of just less than fifteen hundred faculty and professionals as well as approximately 250 University & College member institutions with a commitment to broadcast and electronic media education. Our purpose is in our slogan, "Educating Tomorrow's Electronic Media Professionals." 

Committee of Concerned Journalists - A consortium of reporters, editors, producers, publishers, owners and academics worried about the future of the profession. To secure journalism's future, this group believes that journalists from all media, geography, rank and generation must be clear about what sets the profession apart from other endeavors. To accomplish this, the group is creating a national conversation among journalists about principles. 

Editorial Freelancers Association - A national, nonprofit, professional organization of self-employed workers in the publishing and communications industries. The EFA works to raise the professional status of its members and to make the freelance life more dynamic and rewarding. For clients of freelancers, EFA is a nationwide bank of professionals experienced in the full range of editorial disciplines. 

Freelance Online - A professional online service for freelancers in the publishing and advertising fields. It serves as a directory for employers and as a resource and information center for freelancers. The operators of Freelance Online intend to make this site a primary resource center for small business owners and the self-employed.  Freelance Online is committed to serving freelancers and employers already established in the Web community and those who are new to the Web. Freelance Online's goal is to provide the most comprehensive listing of freelancers available, including not only established, seasoned professionals but also fresh, new talent.

The International Newspaper Marketing Association (INMA) - INMA is dedicated to strengthening the marketing of newspaper companies' products, and approaching all activities with a global perspective. INMA will provide members with information and ideas essential to fostering a better understanding of the newspaper company's role in modern society, and how marketing principles can enhance that role.  INMA will share the vision and perspectives of INMA members with others in our industry.  INMA will be a community that nurtures intellectual vitality and promotes a commitment to excellence that will result in recognition of INMA as an innovative, dynamic, and exciting community within which to learn and participate.

Journalism Education Association - The only independent national scholastic journalism organization for teachers and advisers.  The Journalism Education Association supports free and responsible scholastic journalism by providing resources and educational opportunities, by promoting professionalism, by encouraging and rewarding student excellence and teacher achievement, and by fostering an atmosphere which encompasses diversity yet builds unity.

Journalists of American Community Colleges - An association of California and Arizona community college journalism programs designed to provide continuing education for journalism instructors and extended educational opportunities for journalism students. 

National Press Club - The Club stirves to provide people who gather and disseminate news a center for the advancement of their professional standards and skills, the promotion of free expression, mutual support and social fellowship. 

Newspaper Association of America - The NAA focuses on strategic issues of vital importance to newspapers: marketing, public policy, diversity, industry development, and newspaper operations. 

Society of Environmental Journalists - The Society of Environmental Journalists is the only U.S.- based membership organization of working journalists dedicated to improvements in environmental reporting.  The mission of the Society of  Environmental Journalists is to advance public understanding of environmental issues by improving the quality, accuracy, and visibility of environmental reporting.

Society of Professional Journalists - The Society of Professional Journalists is the nation’s largest and most broad-based journalism organization, dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior.


MAJOR WOMEN & MINORITY ASSOCIATIONS

Asian American Journalists Accociation - A non-profit membership organization with about 1700 members in 18 chapters across the U.S. and Asia. 

Bay Area Black Journalists Association - An organization of African American media professionals and students representing radio, television, print, public relations, online journalism
and advertising.  BABJA is also an affiliate of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ).

Bay Area Black Media Coalition - (BABMC) is part of a larger organization known as the National Black Media Coalition (NBMC). The NBMC was founded in 1973 and was organized to offer training and technical support for Blacks as well as represent their views before the Federal Communication Commission (FCC). 

Black Broadcasters Alliance - The BBA is comprised of owners and professionals who want to see equality and real opportunity for African Americans employed in the broadcasting industry and or who are in pursuit of ownership.

California Chicano News Media Association - CCNMA's mission is to promote diversity in the news media by providing encouragement, scholarships and educational programs for Latinos pursuing careers in the news media, and to foster an accurate and fair portrayal of Latinos in the news media, and promoting the social, economic and professional advancement of Latino journalists.

The Freedom Forum - The Freedom Forum is a nonpartisan, international foundation dedicated to free press, free speech and free spirit for all people.  The foundation focuses on four main priorities: the Newseum, First Amendment freedoms, newsroom diversity and world press freedom.

Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation - The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) is dedicated to promoting and ensuring fair, accurate, and inclusive representation of individuals and events in all media as a means of eliminating homophobia and discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation. 

The International Women's Media Foundation - The IWMF was launched in 1990 with the mission to strengthen the role of women in the news media around the world, based on the belief that no press is truly free unless women share an equal voice.

Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS) - JAWS supports the personal growth and professional empowerment of women in newsrooms and works toward a more accurate portrayal of the whole society.

National Black Media Coalition - The National Black Media Coalition (NBMC) works full time and excusively in the communications industry to effect changes beneficial to African Americans. Other national or local groups include communications concerns as items on a broader agenda.  NBMC has gained expertise and recognition because it channels its total energies toward achieving desired goals in a single,  powerful industry.

National Association of Black Journalists - The NABJ's mission is to strengthen ties among African-American journalists, promote diversity in newsrooms, honor excellence and outstanding achievement in the media industry, expand job opportunities and recruiting activities for established African-American journalists and students interested in the journalism field, and expand and balance the media's coverage of the African-American community and experience.

National Association of Hispanic Journalists - The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) is dedicated to the recognition and professional advancement of Hispanics in the news industry. Established in April 1984, NAHJ created a national voice and unified vision for all Hispanic journalists.

National Association of Minority Media Executives - NAMME is the premier organization for media managers and executives of color working in newspapers, magazines, radio, television, cable and new media. 

Y? - The National Forum on Peoples Differences - Y? The National Forum On People's Differences has no agenda or cause, other than to get people talking across their differences - a running dialogue Y? believes most of us would like to see occur but that has yet to fully unfold through the conventional media.

National Lesbian an Gay Journalists Association - NLGJA keeps its members informed of legislative issues that impact gays and lesbians through our website, e-mail and our newsletter.  

Native American Journalists Association - NAJA serves and empowers Native communicators through programs and activities designed to enrich journalism and promote Native cultures. NAJA recognizes Native Americans as distinct peoples based on tradition, culture and protection of the earth.

UNITY - UNITY is a strategic alliance of journalists of color acting as a force for positive change to advance their presence, growth and leadership in the fast-changing global news industry. Members of the charitable association include the: Asian American Journalists Association, National Association of Black Journalists, National Association of Hispanic Journalists, and Native American Journalists Association.
